I was still wet behind the ears. While working as a FOH engineer at Mad’n’Crazy, I got to know the band FIRST AID. Max and his guys were really nice and invited me to their rehearsal room in Pankow shortly afterwards. We had a few beers and got down to business. We went out to Max’s grandfather’s place in Vechta, where I produced my first CD, supervised the recordings, and then mixed and mastered the whole thing. I used to listen to Iron Maiden a lot, and FIRST AID reminded me of them a little. It was really exciting, even if I did despair at times. It was my first CD production and first credit on Discogs after all. Here’s a little sample:

When I completed my training as an audio engineer in May 2005 and decided with my fellow student Daniel to open a recording studio in Berlin’s industrial park, we spent the first year dealing with bureaucracy and securing financing. Then we traveled across Germany to discover talent for our first productions! And bro, I wasn’t disappointed when I drove back to my old home town and went to the old Niko Rock concert in Felsberg! There I discovered Robert, Thomas, and Patrick and invited them straight to Berlin! We had a fantastic 14 days in our studio and the result was a brilliant album! Here’s a quick preview, otherwise stream, buy, download…

During my training at the SAE Institute, I got to know different mixing consoles and microphones in various studios and was able to put theory directly into practice. I started out in a small studio with a Tascam D24 digital console where I recorded GAMBERRA. After that I was allowed to use the Digidesign ICON Console in the much bigger studio where I recorded my second song with STEFFEN BAUSKE. After that I unlocked the final stage and was allowed to work on the SSL 4000G Console and a Sony 24-track Tape Machine! Whohooo. That was exciting! The Band I recorded that day is called FUNKY APES and they played the song “Alles Ok”! The Recordings were also mixed on the SSL4000. Have a listen:

After graduating from high school, I moved to Marburg in 2002 to study musicology. The course was very boring, so instead we just made music in our shared apartment. I wrote the song together with my buddy Steffen on a Pentium computer running Windows 98 and a Terratec sound card. I think I had a cracked version of Cubase SX and Reason 2 as my DAW. Those were the very beginnings of my audiophilia, and shortly afterwards I decided to move to Berlin and start my training at the SAE Institute.

During my school days, I led the video club and later also the music club. We played around with VHS tapes and mini disc recorders. Back then, I wasn’t really into hip-hop. But my buddy Martin started rapping, and then I wanted to make some beats with my guitar. My first software was Magix Music Maker, and I recorded the guitar on an Ikea cassette deck that had a built-in microphone. Those were the days.
