leonora hesse
When I started studying social work at Alice Salomon University in Berlin in 2010, I met Leon, Nora, and Patrick right at the beginning. They had a band together called LEONORA HESSE. They played together as street musicians or on one of the countless open stages in Berlin. We quickly became friends, even went on tour together, and I recorded their debut album in the university’s music room. Here is my favorite song from that record.

dont slip away
I wrote a song and produced it as well. It was the first time I tried the Glyn Johns’s drum Micing technique. The whole kit was recorded with only three microphones which makes it sound more like a complete instrument, rather than micing every component separately. When you record and produce your own music, it is sometimes hard to judge, because you are very close to the creative process. Therefore the vocal recordings and mixing was done by another engineer, Daniel Bär. If you like that kind of music, you may have a look at our band’s archive page.

viva con aqua
Sometimes you just need some dirty punk rock! So I invited Raffael’s band to Berlin. In addition to making music and recording, we also had a great time doing other things. You’re only young once, after all. Here you can listen to their song VIVA CON AQUA which is part of a crowd-funding compilation for the organization of the same name.

ignorant man
When we were touring through Berlin with our Rock Band TINEF, we met some Fellows who had a band called BAND OF FELLOWS. From then on we played some gigs together and after that we spend a weekend in my studio, where I recorded two songs with them. Claudius played the Drums while Tobi played the guitar. I really enjoyed working with those guys, as they were very enthusiastic and energetic. Here is the song ignorant man, performed somewhere in 2018 and mixed and recorded by me.

post mortem
My third LP Production together with my colleague Daniel took place near Bremen on a small farm at the country side. That was quite a contrast between Death Metal tunes and chippy birds. It was definitely not that relaxing as I hoped it to be. And to be honest: it was my first and last death metal production. 🙂

first aid
I was still wet behind the ears. While working as a FOH engineer at Mad’n’Crazy, I got to know the band FIRST AID. Max and his guys were really nice and invited me to their rehearsal room in Pankow shortly afterwards. We had a few beers and got down to business. We went out to Max’s grandfather’s place in Vechta, where I produced my first CD, supervised the recordings, and then mixed and mastered the whole thing. I used to listen to Iron Maiden a lot, and FIRST AID reminded me of them a little. It was really exciting, even if I did despair at times. It was my first CD production and first credit on Discogs after all. Here’s a little sample:

is watt
When I completed my training as an audio engineer in May 2005 and decided with my fellow student Daniel to open a recording studio in Berlin’s industrial park, we spent the first year dealing with bureaucracy and securing financing. Then we traveled across Germany to discover talent for our first productions! And bro, I wasn’t disappointed when I drove back to my old home town and went to the old Niko Rock concert in Felsberg! There I discovered Robert, Thomas, and Patrick and invited them straight to Berlin! We had a fantastic 14 days in our studio and the result was a brilliant album! Here’s a quick preview, otherwise stream, buy, download…

funky apes
During my training at the SAE Institute, I got to know different mixing consoles and microphones in various studios and was able to put theory directly into practice. I started out in a small studio with a Tascam D24 digital console where I recorded GAMBERRA. After that I was allowed to use the Digidesign ICON Console in the much bigger studio where I recorded my second song with STEFFEN BAUSKE. After that I unlocked the final stage and was allowed to work on the SSL 4000G Console and a Sony 24-track Tape Machine! Whohooo. That was exciting! The Band I recorded that day is called FUNKY APES and they played the song “Alles Ok”! The Recordings were also mixed on the SSL4000. Have a listen:
