In 2009 I returned to my old school, but this time as kind of a teacher myself. Every year, a drug prevention day is held there for eighth graders. The aim is to introduce young people to alternatives to drug-induced highs. So I used the day to produce a song with a small group. The participants recorded and composed it themselves. In workshops like this, I tend to stay in the background as a silent mentor and try to get the best technical results possible in the short time available. The result is impressive!

goya
While hanging out in the bars of Kreuzberg sometime between 2008 and 2009, I met a spanish artist who was working on a video installation for an exhibition in Madrid about Francisco de Goya. I offered to do the sound design and set her animated images to music, creating a short acoustic journey through Goya’s works. In addition to my own sounds, I also used recordings from freesound.org. This is a great resource for royalty-free samples and sounds, where anyone can make their own recordings available.

das fahrrad
I provided the soundtrack for a short commercial for a sustainability agency and played a few notes on the guitar. Nothing fancy, but I still think it’s quite nice.

post mortem
My third LP Production together with my colleague Daniel took place near Bremen on a small farm at the country side. That was quite a contrast between Death Metal tunes and chippy birds. It was definitely not that relaxing as I hoped it to be. And to be honest: it was my first and last death metal production. 🙂

first aid
I was still wet behind the ears. While working as a FOH engineer at Mad’n’Crazy, I got to know the band FIRST AID. Max and his guys were really nice and invited me to their rehearsal room in Pankow shortly afterwards. We had a few beers and got down to business. We went out to Max’s grandfather’s place in Vechta, where I produced my first CD, supervised the recordings, and then mixed and mastered the whole thing. I used to listen to Iron Maiden a lot, and FIRST AID reminded me of them a little. It was really exciting, even if I did despair at times. It was my first CD production and first credit on Discogs after all. Here’s a little sample:

foh engineer at lido
In the 1960s, the Lido in Berlin was a so-called border cinema. In 2006, I was given the opportunity to work as a FOH engineer on the LIDO team following renovation work. It was exciting to see how the conversion into a live venue took place. The entire building had to be acoustically separated from the adjacent building, and several airlocks were installed to comply with noise protection regulations. My work began in May 2006 with British Music Week, and I got to know many great artists. But the team from the KARRERA KLUB with Kalle and Spencer were also great colleagues. Here is an excerpt of some of the bands I mixed there as a FOH engineer until 2007: You say party we say die, Johnossi, Gus Black, The Subways, Disco Ensemble, Spitting off tall buildings, Morton Valence, Kat Frankie, …

is watt
When I completed my training as an audio engineer in May 2005 and decided with my fellow student Daniel to open a recording studio in Berlin’s industrial park, we spent the first year dealing with bureaucracy and securing financing. Then we traveled across Germany to discover talent for our first productions! And bro, I wasn’t disappointed when I drove back to my old home town and went to the old Niko Rock concert in Felsberg! There I discovered Robert, Thomas, and Patrick and invited them straight to Berlin! We had a fantastic 14 days in our studio and the result was a brilliant album! Here’s a quick preview, otherwise stream, buy, download…

home sweet europe
HEIMAT EUROPA was a project to engage in european identity organized by KMGNE. I did the sound design and boom operation for that short movie. Actors in a leading role were Jean Denis Römer, Ingmar Skrinjar and Mareike Wenzel. The movie was directed by Nicolas Flessa and Daniela Görig.
